Adolf Hitler was born on April 20, 1889 in Austria, though most of his life, until he finally accomplished it with the Anschluss [annexation] in 1938, he wanted Austria to be politically reunited with Germany. Hitler always considered himself German. He was the third son of Alois Hitler and Klara Polzl. Alois Hitler (born Alois Schicklgruber) was a second cousin to Klara and, since they were both Roman Catholic, a papal dispensation had to be obtained for them to marry. Adolf Hitler had in his background one of those interesting historical sidebars - a "what if" - that bears mention: Hitler's father was born illegitimate, and for the first 39 years of Alois's life he was Alois Schicklgruber. But in 1876 his stepfather, Johann Hitler, adopted him and he became Alois Hitler, the name he passed on to young Adolf, who was to become THE Hitler. The "what if" comes if you imagine what would have happened if Alois had still been "Schicklgruber" when Adolf was born. Adolf would have been Adolf Schicklgruber, and it's really hard to imagine masses of adoring Germans screaming "Heil Schicklgruber." The whole course of history might have been changed, just because of a name!
